A Little Segue

It never ceases to amaze me how quickly a cat will hop into a suitcase when one is opened up
-
I have so much to tell you all. Stories about what happened at my elementary school job, Irish dance, how Jon went from thinking about being a patent attorney to joining a business venture, to work on the inside of the house, the garden I'm actually working on outside, my new job, my new business (yes, I said business!) and so much more!
-
However, those tales will have to wait as I'm packing right now for a road trip to Dallas.  My friend and I will be joining and hanging out with another friend, the lovely, talented and incredibly artistic Pascalle Lepas, of this online comic, who will be a guest speaker at A-Kon.  That's right, I'm going to be a groupie at a nerd convention, and I'm actually excited about it.  Nothing like getting out of town and hanging with some geeks to change up the routine.  I promise pictures and more stories to type (dear lord will I ever get through all of them?!) soon.
-
Have a lovely weekend everyone!

Bring on 2011!!

What are you doing this New Year's Eve? I will be partying it up with some friends at Jon's. Baked brie, raclette (I got an awesome Swiss made grill for Christmas), fondue, and a chocolate fountain (borrowed, we weren't going to splurge for a rental) are all on the menu. Of course, there is to be wine and after dinner liquors, and any other beverages our friends may bring. As I've told many people we're sending off 2010 and ringing 2011 in style.
-
In random Oklahoma weather news, yesterday the temps hit 70, there was a tornado warning in the middle of the night, it's windy this morning as a cold front is beginning to move through, and tonight the temps are supposed to drop into the 20s and apparently a winter weather advisory has been issued for later tonight.
-
I guess Oklahoma wants to send off 2010 and ring in 2011 with some flair too!
-
Happy and Safe New Years to you!! May 2011 be filled with many joys and triumphs. I look forward to the new year and I count myself lucky to have so many friends willing to ride along. As the French say, gros bisous!! See ya next year!

A Little Shout Out

To these two gorgeous people.
To this crazy nice guy.

To this precocious and sweet child.

To this amazingly strong young lady.

Four dancers, one teacher. They all went to DC this weekend for the Southern Region Oireachtas (o-rock-tahs, a major Irish dancing competition). Lots of competitors and even more pressure. If you score high enough there not only to you get bragging rights, but, a chance to go to the National competition, even the World stage.
-
Every one of these dancers not only did well enough to make it to the third round (roughly half of the competition), but, they all scored high enough to qualify for the National competition to go. I couldn't be prouder of all of them. The young lady broke her elbow two and a half weeks ago and competed in a cast- she's going to Nationals. The crazy sweet guy has had to make major changes in his technique- he's going to Nationals. The precocious, sweet kiddo has learned hard lessons about motivation and worked even harder to improve- she's going. My gorgeous friend has worked her tail off and pushed through many doubts and moved up thirty places from last year- she too is going.
-
Then there's my gorgeous teacher who has worked so incredibly hard this year, not only with us dancers, but, also in hopes of passing the difficult TCRG examination.
-
Not only did she bring dancers up to be able to go to Nationals, but, also passed the TCRG (only 30% do at a time!). Now we are about to become our own school and we're so excited. So, I had to give a shout out to my friends who have worked incredibly hard and long for this. They are so deserving of a little bit of attention!

Feeling Some Serious Love... and Pain

Lake Oklmulgee via some website about US scenic sites. The scene of some MAJOR fun yesterday.
-
Friday was the pits, I mean The.Pits. First, the electric bill was WAY higher than needed despite me never being at the new place my roomie and I moved into (I've been at Jon's since Leo's accident as there's more room to manuever and take care of a lame lab). My roomie apologized profusely blaming her lack of knowledge on how to use the thermostat which was fixed when her father came over thank GOD! So, thanks to that snafu, the bills were at least a hundred bucks more than anticipated, if not more. While that isn't a huge amount it certainly is enough to make me panic as I'm going to be poorer next month. Of course, to make things more interesting I need to get my laptop repaired before the plug in jack goes kaput- which will probably set me back nearly 130 dollars and put my laptop out of commission for a week. Add in the fact that my roomie got a raise (much deserved btw) I landed into a deep, deep funk. Jon had 10 year reunion stuff to do this weekend so I wasn't going to have much time with him and that kinda made it worse. Because, again, I was one major funk
-
When my friend called me up asking me if I wanted to go the lake Friday and jet ski with her hubby and some mutual friends the next day you can imagine how excited I was. Saturday morning I was scheduled to be a volunteer at a dog agility competition at the school where I learned to train Louie. It was actually quite fun and a workout as I was given the position of running back and forth to reset equipment after every competitor. So I did that, and it was good, as the tasks took my mind off of things. After I was through with that I came home to get ready to go to the lake! My friends picked me up, we picked up neccessary supplies (water, beer, you know the essentials for going to a body of water), and were off to Lake Okmulgee (about an hour south of Tulsa) with two jet skis in tow and an intertub that would hold two. Just right to go tubing using a jet ski.
-
You can only imagine the amount of wipeouts that occured yesterday! Oh.My.Gosh! I am in pain today, but, it was beyond worth it. My friends and I had such a blast and I was reminded why I love the lake, or any other body of water for that matter (I used to live in the lake during the summer we lived next to when my family and I lived in Michigan). Not even the loss of my new pair of Target sunglasses, lost due to me being thrown into the lake off of a jet ski head first after a wicked turn, dampaned the amount of good feelings I was having. After tons of fun in the sun, far too many wipeouts and laughs, we headed back, ate pizza, buffalo wings, and ice cream to compensate for the calories burned while on the lake, and drank a bit more. I was one happy, tired zombie when I finally got my carcass to bed around 2am.
-
Today when I rolled out of bed, got coffee, and turned on the laptop (yes, pretty much in that order) I went to my Blogger Dashboard page to see what I missed. Comments from friends who were sending out some love and good vibes were waiting for my approval. Between hearing the words, 'We're there for you" and "We'll support you through this" yesterday from my friends, and all the comments I've recieved during this time on this little 'ol blog, I am feeling some majorly good luv and vibes right now (despite the fatigue and aches everywhere in my body today lol). You all are seriously the best!! I know it's gushy and cheesy to say this, but, you guys mean a lot to me. I know most of us have not met in person, so it just blows me away the support all of you are giving me. Saying thank you is not enough, but, it's all I can do for now! So THANK YOU!! Sending out good cosmic vibes, as Sara Louise would say, and thanks to wherever you may be.

Baptism

Two weeks and a bit ago Jon and I went to Dallas for a baptism. Jon was asked to be the godfather of our friends's latest addition, so, of course we were going to go! I took the opportunity to take a lot of pictures, trying to work on shooting informal portraits and candid shots. I'm rather pleased with how things turned out! I by no means will ever be a pro, but, I like to try and take nice pictures. I am still learning how to mess with lighting settings (I am SO lost when it comes to this sometimes!) so I had to go through and edit some of the pictures to tone down a hardcore yellow tinge in the the sanctuary.
-
Okay so enough of all the photography talk. Enjoy some serious cuteness; their daughter literally made my ovaries twitch, NO JOKE! The family opted for the baptism only ceremony so everything was very quiet, intimate, and of course lovely.
Proud Mamma and Dad.
She is just too precious isn't she?

Jon's godson and goddaughter.

Yes, you are adorable, and yes, I am taking pictures of you, so work the cute!

Sealing the deal- that's what I like to call it anyways.

See what I mean by weird lighting/editing issues. Good pic of Jon and I, but, I can't stand how this came out! May have to and tinker with it. But, hey, at least there's a shot of the cutie pie and that counts for something right?

Little Rock Feis 2010- A [lengthy] Post With Photos and Reflections

Friday before the feis I woke up, packed up the last of my needed items, checked things off of my list, headed to my chiropractor, lunch with Jon, then on to my classmate's parent's house. I hitched a ride to Little Rock with them and another mother and her 6 year old daughter. We hit the road around 2:30pm and soon after we were on I-40 headed to Arkansas.

Here's the 8 year old watching movies en route.
-
The invention of a tv screen in a moter vehicle is a fantastic one. May not be the most life altering type of invention, but, I think it saves some parental sanity. For those who are curious we did not watch "Tinkerbell" much to my disappointment. However, there was a Barbie movie which I tried to watch, I really did. But, I got a bit carsick so I stopped watching and joined the conversation going on between the moms.
Living in Hilton luxery for the night.
-
You may think me quite crazy to hitch a ride in a vehicle with two young children. To be honest, it didn't bother me a bit! I think it helps that I work with young children most days of the week. Even if I didn't work with them, still, splitting the cost of a hotel room at the Hilton plus splitting the cost of gas is well worth putting up with any shenanigans an 8 and 6 year old can dish out.
-
Truely though, the little ones are great kids and they kept me laughing throughout the trip. Mucho needed as I was SO nervous!
Checking out in your wig and make-up. You would be surprised at how many people think the wig is a person's natural hair.
-
D-day- ie Feis morning. My room woke up early to begin the routine of getting ready to head out and get our Irish dance on. Luckily for me, I'm old enough to get myself ready and I don't have to worry about a wig just yet. What's the deal with the wigs you ask? Apparently girls and women would curl their hair whenever they competed or performed. Someone got the idea that curling your hair and keeping it curled was cumbersome (it is btw!) so people starting putting on wigs with curls and all instead. I actually like them and as looney tooney as it sounds I really want to wear one! They look great when you're bouncing around onstage AND I've always wanted tons of natural curl without tons of effort. Ahh those things you obsess about when you have straight hair.

Ready to get her feis on.
-
Here's my school's 6 year old, Miss Imp extraodinaire. Like me she was participating in her first feis. She isn't wearing a wig because she's a beginner and also because she's just too young. Some people in Irish dance can be hung up on appearances unfortunatly. Fortunatly for us, our teacher isn't about to stick little girls in make-up and wigs! She just doesn't find it reasonable and I couldn't agree more!

Susan looking rather smashing in her wig!
-
Okay, 'nuff about the wigs. Saturday morning turned out a wee bit hectic for our crew. The 8 year old's mom and I both FORGOT our outfits for the feis!! Oy and vey! In my defense I was up at 6am and hadn't had all of my coffee. One of the moms ran back to the hotel to fetch our outfits, but, after she left those of us left behind realized we were at the WRONG location!! All worked out well though, we hitched a ride on a shuttle and met the mom at the correct location; funny side note the correct location was probably no more than three blocks from our hotel! Oh life, you're so funny sometimes! Fortunatly the competition started a bit late so we were where we needed to be with plenty of time to get ready.

Met up with the rest of the KBS Tulsa crew at the feis. Here's the 10 year old getting her shoes on.
-
The fies was in one huuuuuge room at a convention center. Four stages, plus a podium stage, plus a few vendors, plus the tabulation table, plus one concession area, and three hundred people all fit comfortably in this room. I couldn't believe it, but, compared to the feis I observed in Dallas (which was about the same size people wise) this environment was much calmer and I really loved it.

The essence of getting ready to dance- dress bags, hangers, make-up, hair products, shoes, and water.
-
I had about two hours before I had to dance. I warmed up with my classmates, but, didn't go at it too hard as my shins were still a bit tender. Nerves began to set in and for about 30 seconds I considered bolting! My hands were shaking and it took nearly 15 minutes for me to put my make-up on. My teacher KT kept telling me to breathe and relax. Afterall, it was my first feis and I was there for experience. I could've fallen all over the stage and she was still going to advance me! I know, why was I so nervous?! I was in a win-win situation. Still, I'm a perfectionist and I wanted to do well. I didn't care so much about my results (ok I cared a little!) as I truely believe that doing well on stage trumped any placement.

Getting fitted properly for shoes is a MUST! I loved the people who fitted me and Susan. So nice, professional, took all the time needed for a proper fitting. If you ever find yourself in Irish Dance I would highly reccomend Ballinvilla- George and Betsy are precious and they really care about you and your feet!
-
So how did it go for me you ask? I LOVED being on stage! Before the stage part I checked in and was ready to pass out at that point. Sarah (an older adult dancer) was the perfect mother hen and gave me lots of last minute encouragement and advice. I got on stage for my reel dance. Two other dancers were with me. I started first with another lady and right as the music started the judge pointed his finger to move on the other side of the lady! Oh my GAWD! So I quickly scooted behind her and got to the other side just in time for the new phrase and for me to begin! The judge smiled and nodded at me and I nearly died!
-
Despite the bumpy start I went at it with tons of energy. God bless endorphines! I got really close to the edge of the stage, but, stayed on it and finished well. In fact, halfway into my reel I thought, 'Hmmm, this is fun!' I made some little mistakes with my arms and my turnout wasn't very good at all (shin splints didn't help, but, to be truthful turnout is my weakest area). After the reel I waited for about 5-10 minutes to go at my slip jig. I was bubbling over with adreline and used that to bounce and move all over the stage when I danced again. I was so happy afterwords! Two of my classmates came up to me and gave me hugs and congratulations! What a rush!

KBS Tulsa's 10 year old near champion level dancer. Isn't she precious?
-

Not only was dancing on stage an unbelievable joy to me, watching my other classmates get up there on stage and do well was a true pleasure. Our little KBS Tulsa team were running back and forth getting to their respective stages as well as the stages our classmates were on. We were all rooting for one another and ready to help with bobby pins, spare shoes, and anything else needed to help us perform. I could not ask for a better group to be part of!

The eight year old in her solo dress
-
'Team Tulsa' as we dubbed ourselves, did exceptionally well! Susan recieved three first places and one second place, the 8 year old was in the top four in each dance she performed in, the 10 year old also recieved three firsts and a second, Sarah was in first or second in all of her dances, and another teen dancer placed in the top four as well in each of her dances! The six year old beginner (it was her first feis too) recieved two first placements, one second, and one third. I recieved a first in my reel and a second in my slip jig- I was in shock! But, most importantly we all worked hard, did our best, and were there to support one another.

KT, my instructor, and Sarah all smiles.
-
Since Irish dance is a competitive performing art there is a lot of pressure to place well so you can advance to the next level. With each level the steps get harder and whenever you are being judged by a person you just don't know how well it's going to go. It is subjective, but, on the flip side recieving constructive criticism can help one improve. I thought I danced my slip jig better than my reel, but, the judges changed and another judge watched my slip jig. She counted me off more for my weak turnout than the other judge did. Rather than get down about it I am actually more motivated to improve! No one is more surprised than me at how I have reacted to being on stage and being judged. I guess maturity and perspective make all the difference.

Showing off the bling is a must!
-
Fortnatly I have a bit of time before the next feis to get harder steps and improve my technique. Being an adult dancer isn't quite as high intensity as competiting as a youngin'. I actually had some adults and one of my competitors come up to me and give me congratulations and hugs! How nice is that? I know there are those who wouldn't be so nice and welcoming, but, I think if you understand that going in you can buffer yourself to that craziness. After all, in all areas of life there are just going to be some people who will be very intense and over the top about anything whether it's a sport, art, an academic subject, politics, religon, etc etc.
That smile is priceless! She had so much fun dancing that day.
-
What did I get out of my first feis? I got a sense of community with my classmates and a renewed sense of what competition is about. It isn't about the other person, the placements (though if you do well it is nice- no lie!), it's about me and how I do before and up to the actual performance. I used to dread any competition for anything because I was so worried about not doing well. Now, I only worry about working diligently up to the day I compete and having a performance I can learn from. If I hadn't had such support from my classmates and work discipline my shin splints would've gotten the best of me and I seriously doubt I would've made it to the feis much less dance as well as I did.
Having a bit of fun.

Part of KBS Team Tulsa crew. We had such a great day!
-
It seems that despite a life time's worth of 'competition sucks' mentality getting into Irish dance I will get some fabulous and positive life lessons out of it. I haven't had that much fun in a competition since my high school band days. Completly worth the trip, the effort, the pain, the tears, etc etc. I am still smiling today and can't wait for more. Good or bad results be da***d, I say bring it on!

It Was A Good Weekend

My awesome classmate and friend Susan and moi
-
I know my lips look a bit puckered, but, can you tell I was beaming when this pic was taken? Why you ask? Because it was a fabulous weekend at the Little Rock Feis for Team Tulsa!! I can't wait to tell you all about it!
-
In the meantime I'll let you all in on a little part of what happened Saturday- there are four first places (individual dances) between Susan and !!! IHow's them apples?

Bright and Early

This morning I got my half-awake body out of bed (I only slept a small handful of hours), got in the shower, got 'dolled' up, and had Jon take me and the boys to the Cherry Street Farmers Market. Why was I there? For food? Nope. For fresh produce? Nope.
-
I was there to dance!
An Irish music band, An tír glas Céilidh, invited us [students of my Irish dance school] to dance while they played for the market crowd. As I'm going to compete in a dance competition soon, I figured this would be a good experience. I haven't danced in front of a crowd since I was nine.

With the boys in tow, and no coffee in my stomach, Jon and I arrived at the Market.

Of course, a pow-wow is neccessary even for a relatively low key dance like this one.

As well as, an obligatory 'check out Cathleen and I rock this parochial school girl look' picture. I've never worn a plaid skirt that made my legs look somewhat decent, so, I had to document it. Vain, I know, but, when you have a complex about your legs like me you would understand.

The boys were pretty excited. I had to reign them in several times, especially since Jon wasn't in the mood. He hadn't had breakfast, poor guy. Understandable he lacked the strength to handle the puppies. ;-)

Oh, yes, right the dancing part. Yes, there was some of that. I screwed up a couple of things, at first, buuuuuttt, I recovered and had some fun. Hmmm... will have to work on that arm and upper body carriage though.

Sorry! Can't help but analyze! Check this lady out-her name is Sarah, she's 52, a dective, and she can dance circles around me. She's one heck of an inspiration.

A quick note- what we did today, dance wise, is called a step-about. Everyone takes a turn to dance a step or two (step= equals a bunch of steps done with one leg leading then the opposite). Anyways, in a step-about there's a bit of waiting, but, you have to pay attention 'cause if you don't, you look like an idiot starting late.

Please note, that idiot comment was not a reference to me nor any of the other dancers. Okay, so maybe I was a beat late, but, it didn't look like it to anyone soo... doesn't apply. Right? Right?!

After some we danced the dogs, who did a good job waiting around with the crowds, had to be loved on. This is me with Louie (who you all know well!) and Maddie- an eight year old spitfire who I have to keep up with in class every week! She's cute, and nice, so, when I can't keep she's very sweet about it.

No worries, Leo got plenty of love too!

You know what the best part about today was? It wasn't learning to dance in front of a crowd, not dancing with live musicians, not seeing the market, or the goods there- though all of that was fantastic mind you- it was being with a bunch of really nice people who've embraced me as one of their own and made me feel a part of a family.
-
You may all say, "Awwwwwwww!!" now. ;-)

What Do You Do?

Life's been a bit distracting lately and, of course, I was going to blog all about it.... then all came to a screeching halt in my head. All it takes is life really handing you a doozy to make you gain some serious perspective on your measely 'distractions'.

I will back up and explain. As I was doing my usual perusual of blog and Facebook updates this morning I saw one of my friends post a picture of her father. I haven't seen her father in 10 years as they live in France [I stayed with the family in high school]. The picture was of her father flying and he looked exactly the same way I remembered him and that being so, I posted a comment on her photo.

About 10 minutes later I recieved a FB message from my friend. She told me that her father had passed away, two weeks ago, of a heart attack and that she and her family were having a hard time. I literally felt a Mack Truck hit me on the inside. I wrote back express my condolences of course, said what I could think of that would be comforting- felt like a complete looser for missing the status messages (no worries I didn't say that to her).

I don't think those words were enough. Though obviously those words were better than nothing. I wish there was more I could do, could say... I would love nothing more than to hop on a plane right now, go to Paris, and give her and her family a hug- cost be damned. Unfortunatly I don't have the cash to spare at the moment (one of those 'distractions' I spoke of earlier) and I have no clue what to do so far away. I am very unfamiliar with French customs when it comes to the loss of a loved one- I'm very familiar with American ones though, cards, flowers...food.

So... what do I do? Or is there anything I can do?

This Makes Me Happy

My long-lost friend Charles and I at Wild Fork
(ignore the shiny face and windblown look please)
As addictive as Facebook is, I love it. The picture above is why I love it. Charles and I went to the same church for awhile when we were 'youngins'. Then due to life stuff we lost contact. About three to four years ago I did a Facebook search for him and voilĂ ! He was studying at Villanova at the time (then he went to London for grad school- lucky duck!) so I added him and from there we communicated via technology. Well, finally he made it back to Tulsa last week and despite my sprained ankle we met up at Wild Fork for a yummy breakfast outside. It was great and despite my clumsiness (I knocked down my water glass to give him a hug when he arrived- classic), and the fact that I was uncaffienated, we had a great time chatting. Seriously, best way to start the day- catching up with a friend, laughing, talking, and eating great food.
Just one of those great life moments.

Vintage Girls

Contrary to what my previous post says, yesterday truely wasn't all that bad! In fact I met up with my friend Heather to do some vintage clothes shopping. We didn't have a whole lot of time, and neither of us bought anything, however, we had a blast running around and look at cool, old, and funky items.

Cheap Thrills Vintage (our first stop) is right next door to the Tulsa Scooter store. Heather wanted the green one and I wanted the pink. We would've looked too cool riding around in these.

They had TONS of hats. I love hats and I had to restrain myself from getting any. Sooooo tempting.

Classic- a blogger taking a pic of another blogger taking a pic.

I heart this sign. I wonder if it's for sale? It'd totally rock having it on the back porch. Hmmmm.... what would the neighbors think? Wait, do I really care all that much? Mwa ha ha ha!

Seeing the ruffles on this tux takes me back to my freshman and sophmore year of high school and the band uniform I was subjected to. Yes, we had a dust ruffle, and yes it really does sound as bad as it looked.

I don't really love this lamp, yet I was drawn to it. I had no rational reason to buy it other than it's a tacky porcelin lamp. Is that strange?
I didn't get any pics of the second store, but, that doesn't mean there won't be in the future. Overall, seriously good times! Must do this again when there's more time to really shop and try things on!

What We Were Doing New Years Eve?

A new house on New Year's Eve Means...

Party Time!

There must be champagne of course (along with TONS of food)

Good company too

Jon's final salute to 2008.

This is how Jon feels about 2009. Hopeful that it'll be a bit better overall than 2008.

This is how we all feel today... But oh so worth it
